Microneedling Pen vs. Microneedling Roller What’s the difference?
Microneedling Pen vs. Microneedling Roller what’s the difference?
We’ve all heard of the term ‘micro needling’, indeed a lot of clinics and salons still provide microneedling for skin rejuvenation using traditional ‘derma roller’ devices. Technology has thankfully moved forward with the invention of the medical ‘ microneedling pen’, which is a much more advanced and effective method for skin rejuvenation.
Both Microneedling Pen and Microneedling Rollers are forms of microneedling used to stimulate the production of new collagen by needling the skin. Microneedling causes micro-injuries to the epidermis, which signals the body to produce collagen to remodel the damaged area, which in effect rejuvenates the skin making your skin look younger and fresher and effective treats an array of common skin concerns such as acne scarring, lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture, stretch marks, hair thinning and more…
So, if both the microneedling pen and roller are both forms of microneedling then what makes them so different?
More precise:
Microneedling pens can easily treat those hard to reach areas such as around the eyes, nose and upper lip whereas it is more difficult to reach these areas with traditional rollers.
Customised treatment:
Needle depth can be adjusted with Microneedling Pen whereas the Microneedling Rollers can only reach a single depth. The benefit of adjusting needle depth allows us to cater to different areas of the face that require different penetration levels for best results.
This is extremely important when treating specific skin concerns such as acne scarring or delicate areas of the face such as the eye area.
Less epidermal damage resulting in minimal down time
The needles in Microneedling Pens penetrate the skin vertically whereas with Microneedling rollers the needles penetrate the skin at an angle causing more chance of ‘tears’ through the skin leading to more side effects and therefore longer recovery time.
Fast treatment with minimal discomfort
As Rejuvapen has a built in motorised system it is more precise and accurate on its depth of penetration and can penetrate the skin from up to 100 times per second with an adjustable speed whereas speed cannot be adjusted with Dermarollers as this is dependent on the handlers technique. Being able to adjust the speed minimises skin damage, pain and recovery time.
What is micro-needling and how does it work?
Micro-Needling skin therapy is a multi-function treatment that uses small needles to cause tiny punctures in the skin.
These small contact points encourage the body to create a wound healing response and renew the skin cells. As your skin repairs, serum growth factors stimulate new collagen and elastin development. This treatment is most commonly used to combat acne and surgical scarring, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, loose and non-elastic skin and stretch marks.
This micro-needling treatment is based on the natural rejuvenating power of the skin. Shortly after any injury to the human skin, old and damaged skin tissue dissolves and is replaced by new cells. The gentle, controlled vertical needling method used in the Dermapen treatment encourages this organic self-repair mechanism on a microcosmic scale.

What can be Expected in the hours, days, and weeks following your Dermapen:
Topical Anesthetic will be applied for patient comfort.
Immediately after your Dermapen treatment, you will look as though you have a moderate to severe sunburn and your skin may feel warm and tighter than usual. This is normal and will subside after 1 to 2 hours and will normally recover within the same day or within 24 hours. You may see slight redness after 24 hours, but only in minimal areas or spots.
Your practioner will prescribe post-procedure skincare after the procedure to help soothe, calm and protect the skin. Continue to use for 3 days. Active skincare can be resumed again after Day 3.
After the Treatment here are some things that you can do to help the process of skin rejuvenation be most effective:
CLEAN – Use a soothing cleanser or face wash with tepid water to cleanse the face for the following 48 hours and gently dry the treated skin. Always make sure that your hands are clean when touching the treated area.
HEAL – Professional skincare is recommended post-treatment as the pharmaceutical grade properties are ideal to help heal the skin, but will also create a sterile skin, too. Resveratrol-based products can help soothe the skin and lessen irritation.
HYDRATE – Following your Dermapen treatment, your skin may feel drier than normal. HyaluronicAcid is an ideal ingredient to hydrate and restore the skin back to perfect balance.
STIMULATE – In the days following your Dermapen treatment, and as the skin starts to regenerate, collagen stimulating peptides are ideal to continue the stimulation.
MAKEUP – It is recommended that makeup should not be applied for 12 hours after the procedure. However, your practitioner may be able to supply you with specialized mineral makeup product that theyfeel would be suitable for use during this period. Do not apply any makeup with a makeup brush, especially if it is not clean.
PROTECT – Immediately after the procedure, apply a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen with aSPF 30. A chemical-free sunscreen is highly recommended.
For at least 2 hours post treatment, do NOT use any Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Retinol(Vitamin A), Vitamin C (in a low pH formula) or anything perceived as ‘active’ skincare.
Avoid intentional and direct sunlight for 24 hours. No tanning beds.
Do not go swimming for at least 24 hours post-treatment.
No exercising or strenuous activity for the first 24 hours post-treatment. Sweating and gym environmentsare harmful, and may cause adverse reactions.
Your technician will advise you when to follow up for the most accurate results which are usually 4-6 weeks. Please remember 2-4 minimum treatments are recommended, but more treatments are usually necessary to achieve maximal rejuvenation. There is no guarantee for results.
